Ron Esau was one of the first NASCAR Drivers from the west coast to mix it up with some of the Good ole boy of NASCAR EAST. Ron's 4 major wins in sportsman events on the historical Riverside International Racing 2.62 road course gave Ron several rides with some of the west coast races in NASCAR. Ron raced NASCAR Sportsman (now Nationwide events) with Dale Earnhardt, Richard Childress, Darrell Waltrip, Dale Jarrett, Mark Martin and some of the best drivers in the world at the age of 17. Ron's heros were Bobby Allison and Dan Gurney. Ron watched Dan Gurney in the Wood Brothers Ford win 6 of 7 NASCAR racing on the Riverside Road course. Ron also got a chance to drive several times for James Hylton, Buddy Arrington and had a great time learning the big tracks. In 1986 Ron won the NASCAR inaugural Southwest tour championship. Ron moved back east to get the experience needed to race in NASCAR top division in 1988. At 34 years of age Ron was to young and did not have big track experience. After a few months of running for Buddy Arrington on a very limited budget, Ron came home to help take over the family business and race for a hobby and coach others. Ron finished 3rd in Australia behind Terry Labonte and Ken Schrader in 1990. That finish helped Ken Schrader’s decision in putting Ron Esau in his AC Delco Truck in Monroe Washington when Kenny cut off his thumb in the pits. Ron Esau's friend and competitor Ron Hornaday beat out Ron Esau in a West Coast Winter heat and received a call from Dale Earnhardt to drive for him on the east coast. Ron Esau’s first Crew Chief Marc Reno moved back east with Mark Martin to become one of the best crew chiefs in the business. Ron Esau’s good friend of the family and fellow racer Jerry Baxter moved back east and became the crew chief for Michael Waltrip’s Nationwide team. Ron has several friends in NASCAR Racing and this site shares some of the photos and link to this fun but sometimes dangerous sport. Ron has lots of connection to the NASCAR east coast and would like to share some of his photos.
Ron's latest trip visited fellow San Diego's racer Brian Ickler with Rons Golf buddy,Spotter,Sponsor, and friend Dave Reed. Dave Reed son Austin Reed is a new young racer to watch for.

Ron also is getting his feet wet in the Off-Road Racing Series. Ron and Crew,Sponsor Ed Bernardo have been crewing for Justin Lofton is the Best of the Desert Racing Series.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS

2005 Irwindale Speedway (3rd Place Open Show End of the Year). RON had been helping train other drivers like Brendon Gaughan and Brandon Whitt, with coaching and spotting but in 2003 purchased an older Super Late Model Port-City car and started driving again. Ron was happy to finish the season with a 3rd place in the season ending racing and gear up for some more top finishes.

1996 New California Speedway (6th Place Winston WEST). RON was more than excited about his 6th place finish behind the Winston Cup regulars. The team knew from the beginning that RON had the experience and knowledge of racing super speedways but the ADVANTAGE MEMORY Monte Carlo owned by DAVE REED was lacking in horsepower compared all but one other car that had the open 14 to 1 motors with 30 to 40 horsepower more than RON had. "We did the best we could with what we had," quoted Ron. "The team was awesome in the pits getting me out quickly gaining one to two positions at times during the race."

BUNCE ENGINEERING 1995. Drove the #63 Super Truck at Bakersfield, CA (10/15/96) finishing 20th. First time in Bunce Engineering Chevrolet Super Truck without prior practice or association with the Bunce Engineering owner and crew. Owner, Wilbur Bunce, felt that with prior testing and practicing...could have easily finished in top 10. Final race of 1995 inaugural season drove the Bunce Engineering Super Truck for a 2nd time at Phoenix, AZ (10/28/95) And the Invitational in Homestead, Fla.

WALKER EVAN'S RACING. Hired on a race-by-race basis by the Walker Evan's Super Truck team as a chassis, driving coach, and race day consultant for all races except last two (when I drove for Bunce Engineering Super Truck team). Also participated in pre-race setups and testing for the Dodge team. Best finish during the 1995 inaugural Super Truck season for the Walker Evans Super Truck team - 10th at Colorado National Speedway (7/95). Ron Finished 9th place in the 1996 Craftsman Truck race at Bakersfield, CA. Ron Set-up the truck and drove the last half for Walker Evans Racing.

1st SUPERTRUCK RACE, 1995 (9TH). Selected personally by Kenny Schrader to fill his Super Truck ride at Monroe, Washington in May 1995 after a pre-race accident which involved the amputation of Kenny's left thumb. Ron qualified Kenny's AC Delco Super Truck 10th - with no prior Super Truck experience under his belt. Ron maintained his 9th place position during the race while contending with many other experienced Super Truck drivers. Kenny Schrader was very pleased with Ron's 9th place finish. Ron was also interviewed live after the race by TNN and various other news agencies.

FINAL 1994 WINSTON WEST (2ND). Ron teamed up with car owner, Mike Brandt, in the Maguire’s Oldsmobile to finish 2nd at the final Winston West race for 1994 at Tucson Raceway Park. During the 200-lap race, Ron showed he was a dominate factor as he paced his second place position including leading several laps. Ron was also interviewed live by the MRN Radio Network during one of the yellow flag laps.

TEXAS WORLD SPEEDWAY, 1993 (7TH). Spears manufacturing, two-time Winston West Champion, selected Ron Esau to drive for their team at the Texas World Speedway. As third fast qualifier on second day qualifying, Ron was positioned in row 13 to start the race. Ron quickly moved up to the top four and was running 4th when problems transpired -finishing 7th behind Dale Earnhardt, Darrell Waltrip and Kenny Schrader.

FIRST ARCA START, 1992 (5TH).Ron raced in his first ARCA race in March, 1992, at Texas World Speedway and finished 5th.

NASCAR AUSTRALIAN INVITATIONAL RACES. In 1988, Ron was leading the race in 1988 when he blew a motor finishing behind Bobby Allison and Neil Bonnett. Ron donated his winnings to the Jim Robinson Hospital Fund. In 1989, Ron finished 9th. Then 1990 (3rd), Ron competed in his third Australian Invitational race. His third place finish behind Winston Cup stars Terry Labonte and Ken Schrader proved once again that he could run right along with the best.

1986-NASCAR Southwest Tour Champion, 1983-NASCAR Rookie of the year West Coast Winston Cup, 1978 El Cajon Speedway Champion, 1973 Cajon Rookie of the year
